Anesthesiologist Education Requirements

Anesthesiologist education requirements are some of the most rigid in the entire medical field. In fact, many people think they are indeed the hardest of all. That is certainly understandable because the role of anesthesiologist is one in which patients’ lives are literally in their hands, sometimes on a daily basis. For those who have what it takes to go through years of studying, passing the exams and undergoing continuing education it is well worth it salary wise.

Before we dive on into the anesthesiologist education requirements, we will first go over some of what the job itself consists of. During times of surgery, the anesthesiologist will be assigned the task of monitoring the patients’ vital signs as well as administering the specific anesthesia which will be given to the patient prior to the operation. There are three types of anesthesia which are utilized.

The first is referred to as Local, in which a person’s entire body will be numb. General, in which the patient is rendered unconscious and Regional, where the patient is only numbed in a certain part of their body. The administering of anesthesia requires steady nerves and pinpoint accuracy on the part of the anesthesiologist. One error, even minor in nature can result in catastrophic consequences and even death.

And the role of anesthesiologist will often require the working of strange hours, overtime and quite often the anesthesiologist may even be on 24-hour call, ready to rush into work at a moment’s notice. Now as far as anesthesiologist education requirements go, you are basically a doctor who will be preparing patients for surgical procedures. Therefore, you will need many years of education as well as actual training, often on the job in nature.

If you are looking into this as a career you are well-advised to have prior education in mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. You will have to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree and after that still study four more years in medical school. And even then you will yet have to work in an internship capacity for at least one year, learning all about treatment and diagnosis. If you think that is it; no, there are yet more requirements.

You must also show that you are knowledgeable in pharmacological methods, medicine (both internal and critical), cardiology and all types of surgical procedures. Some anesthesiologists, by their own choosing, elect to branch out into specialties such as neurosurgery. And one thing is for sure, and anesthesiologist will never really be finished studying and learning. The medical field is in a constant state of flux, with new technologies and techniques always popping up.

So if you feel that you are a highly motivated, driven individual who has what it takes to endure the grueling anesthesiologist education requirements along with a desire and ability to work with patients, then by all means consider this prestigious and high paying career. According to the Department of Labor even anesthesiologists with less than a year on the job can expect annual pay anywhere between $76,500 to upwards of $260,000.
